İznik kilns (Bursa)

İznik (ancient Nicaea) is situated at the east end of İznik Gölü and near good pottery-making clay beds. Important pottery workshops were established during the Ottoman period, reaching their zenith in the 16th century with the introduction of faience pottery making. A long-running project, currently led by Ara Altun of İstanbul University, has been investigating the pottery workshops and kilns within the area of the modern city.

2008

Work continued in the BHD area, where a column base and a brick paved floor were uncovered. Many more sherds of the three distinctive plates identified in 2007 were recovered.

2006

In 2006 a small team worked in the southwest corner of an area along Maltepe Caddesi. The usual amount of pottery was found, including lamps, glazed terracotta pipes and tiles. One tile had the following scratched upon it:

İznik kilnleri (Bursa)

İznik (eski Nicaea), İznik Gölü’nün doğu ucunda, nitelikli keramik işçiliğine olanak veren kil yataklarının yakınında yer almaktadır. Osmanlı Döneminde burada önemli keramik işlikleri kurulmuş ve 16. yüzyılda sırlı çini işçiliğinin ortaya çıkması ile doruk noktasına ulaşmıştır. İstanbul Üniversitesi’nden Ara Altun başkanlığındaki uzun-vadeli bir proje, günümüz kent alanı içinde kalan çini üretim işlikleri ve kilnlerini incelemektedir.

2006 yılında küçük bir ekip, bugünkü Maltepe Caddesi üzerinde bulunan alanın güneybatı köşesinde çalışmıştır. Diğer yıllardakine benzer miktarda keramik bulunmuş olup, arasında kandiller, sırlı pişmiş toprak borular ve karolar vardır. Çini karolardan biri üzerinde aşağıdaki işarete rastlanmıştır:
