Assos (Çanakkale)
Situated on the coast south of Ayvacık, opposite the island of Lesbos, Assos was founded during the early part of the 1st millennium BC and flourished during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Occupation in the area has continued, with visible remains of the Roman, Byzantine and later periods. An expedition of the American Institute of Archaeology conducted excavations at the site in 1881-83, while the current excavations began in 1981, under the direction of Ümit Serdaroğlu.
In the 2005 season, work took place in a number of areas, including the temple of Athena and the theatre. Restoration work was also carried out on the Classical fortification walls. This is a long-term conservation project.
A sounding against the city wall produced mixed fill of Seljuk and earlier periods. Elements of a gate were found in the area of the portico at the east end of the agora, an area where the American expedition had worked in the 1880s.
Progress was also made in the work on the necropolis road. Finds included two stone sarcophagi and Archaic pottery. The team plans to restore the road and sarcophagi.

Sahilde Ayvacık’ın güneyinde, Lesbos Adası’nın karşısında yer alan Assos, M.Ö. 1. binyılın başında kurulmuş ve Klasik ve Helenistik dönemler boyunca önemini korumuştur. Roma, Bizans ve daha sonraki dönemlere ait kalıntıların da gösterdiği gibi yerleşim süreklidir. Amerikan Arkeoloji Enstitüsü 1881-1883 yıllarında sitte çalışmalar yapmış, günümüzde devam eden kazı çalışmaları ise 1981’de Ümit Serdaroğlu yönetiminde başlamıştır.2005 sezonunda çalışmalar, aralarında Athena Tapınağı ve tiyatronun da bulunduğu bazı alanlarda yoğunlaşmıştır. Ayrıca Klasik Döneme tarihlenen şehir surlarında, uzun süreli bir konservasyon projesinin parçası olan restorasyon çalışmaları gerçekleştirilmiştir.
Surun yanında açılan bir sondajda Selçuk ve daha erken dönemlere ait dolguya rastlanmıştır. Amerikan heyetinin 1880’lerde çalıştığı alanlardan biri olan agoranın doğu ucundaki revakta bir kapıya ait mimari elemanlar bulunmuştur.
Nekropol yolundaki çalışmalar da ilerlemiştir. Buluntular arasında iki taş lahit ve Arkaik keramikler yer almaktadır. Ekip yol ve lahitlerin restorasyonunu planlamaktadır.
